Elizabeth Taylor’s La Peregrina Pearl Sells at Auction for Record Price

The legendary La Peregrina Pearl has a brand new home and a very lucky new owner… whoever that may be.

Yesterday, Christie’s held an exclusive auction of the late Dame Elizabeth Taylor’s illustrious jewellery collection, and the star lot of the show was the 16th Century La Peregrina Pearl, which originates from our very own Pearl Islands Archipelago.

Mounted on a ruby-and-diamond Cartier necklace, the piece was expected to fetch a cool $3m (£1.9m). When the gavel finally struck however, the bidding had reached a staggering $11.8m (£7.6m), which is a record-breaking price for any pearl ever sold at auction.

Aside from the pearl’s obvious aesthetic beauty and size, it is La Peregrina’s dramatic history which makes it such a precious collector’s item.

Altogether, the auction of 80 pieces from Dame Elizabeth Taylor’s collection massively surpassed all expectations, fetching $116m (£74.9m), which is more than double that of any pervious single collection. A percentage of the astounding proceeds will go to the Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation.
